Field note 19Entry, patron choice & spell inspection

A god is listening.

The carved-mask welcome leads to a drowned courtyard of altars. Inspect the current spells before entering the parish: hover for a quick hint, click for a live preview.

Lantern Mire · Selected front end A threshold before the parish v0.5.16
The actual Godot welcome screen shows a large carved wooden mask, an amber lantern and native Enter the Mire, Settings and Quit controls.
Exact 0.5.16 Mac pack, captured by Godot. A new original AI-generated illustration sits beneath live native controls and restrained lantern and fog motion. Full frame, resized; this is an illustrated menu, not a fully modelled 3D shrine.

Shaun chose the second welcome design and the first god-picker design, then asked to see what happens when an ability is hovered or clicked. Those choices now form the game’s entry flow, ahead of the next combat changes.

One altar answers

The active shrine belongs to Vessara, patron of Rot. The Lantern Bearer is the current wizard. Three other altar silhouettes remain dormant and explicitly unavailable; choosing one explains that state without suggesting an unlock or starting a nonexistent faction.

The large mask from welcome option two and the shrine courtyard from picker option one are separate clean illustrations. Their text and controls are drawn by Godot. The existing Cinzel lettering, bone tones, amber light and cyan focus carry the Lantern Mire identity between them.

The Lantern Bearer stands beside the lit Vessara altar while three future patron altars remain dormant. Three spell icons and the start control sit below.
Actual exported patron screen. Vessara and the Lantern Bearer are the only available pairing. The spell icons and altar hit areas are functioning controls. Full-frame capture, resized.

Look before casting

Hovering or keyboard focus reveals an ability’s purpose, mana cost and cooldown. Clicking or pressing Enter pins a larger panel with the current range and effect details. Escape or Close returns focus to the ability.

The panel runs the actual Rot Bolt, Carrion Bloom or Ground Remembers presentation in its own small 3D world. It reuses our original Blender spell meshes and Godot effects. There is no match, target or soul ledger in that world, so inspecting cannot spend mana or damage anything.

A scripted Godot interface capture shows the Bloom hover hint, the expanded live spell inspector and the return to the ability icons.
Exact exported UI, scripted hover/focus and inspector states. 150 full-frame samples at 20 fps from fixed 60 Hz, resized to 960×540. The preview is real-time Godot rendering; this sequence is not a human playtest or performance measurement.

Time to read it

Saved interface size applies to the menu text and settings. At the largest size, the longer spell description scrolls within its panel while the start control stays available. Remapped keys appear in the ability details. Reduced motion holds a useful spell pose and stops the background motion; saved zero volume mutes the menu.

Carrion Bloom is selected in the actual game menu, with its live fungal field preview and readable mana, cooldown, radius and damage description.
Actual exported inspector at normal text size. Numbers are read from the current game defaults. Full frame, resized.

Into the mire, and back

Enter the Hollow Parish starts the existing match. Pause and the result screen now offer Return to title; Play again remains the quick route to another match. The menu and match stop their own audio before changing scenes.

Input fixtures checked pointer and keyboard activation, dormant rejection, preview replacement, saved preferences and repeated entries into fresh matches. Each starts from the conserved eighteen-soul economy. The broader game regression and exact-pack checks accompany the Mac delivery. Computer use also checked native menu clicks, keyboard inspection, entry into a match, pause, return, settings and quit. Subjective presentation and combat feel still belong to Shaun’s playtest.

The next step

Next comes Lantern Step: RMB teleport for mana, with brood orders moving to G and existing custom controls preserved. Then we will improve creature positioning and add the first flying ranged summon. Extra wild families and additional gods remain later work.
