Field note 20Movement, escape & spell inspection

The space between lanterns.

A paid blink carries the wizard and collected souls to clear aimed ground. The brood follows on foot. Inspect the new spell in the patron courtyard before trying it.

Lantern Mire · Lantern Step A short passage through the mire v0.5.17
Soul-coloured filaments curl around the wizard at the new landing point; mana reads 75 and the Pusling remains behind.
Actual 0.5.17 Mac pack, ordinary eight-metre camera. A staged wizard and paid Pusling demonstrate one real blink. Rival and neutral drivers and base mana regeneration are disabled for this capture. Full frame, resized.

Shaun asked for a mana-powered teleport on the right mouse button. Lantern Step now gives the wizard a quick way out of danger, with a visible landing ring and the same costs and restrictions for the rival.

A place to land

The initial playtest values are twenty metres, twenty-five mana and a three-second cooldown. Aim at clear visible ground: a cyan ring marks a valid destination. Sky, distant ground, steep slopes, occupied landings and cover reject the attempt without charging mana.

The landing must fit the wizard’s whole body and connect to the arena’s walkable surface. The spell checks cover from the wizard and the camera. It keeps your facing and carried souls, clears movement velocity and gives no damage or invulnerability.

The ordinary gameplay crosshair sits on a valid cyan landing ring with the Lantern Step mana hint visible.
Exact exported game before the paid cast. The same validation supplies both this preview and the final landing decision. Full frame, resized.

The brood still walks

Your creatures keep their existing orders and travel physically after you. A carried foreign soul stays with the wizard; a courier continues its own journey. Prepared enemy attacks, pursuit and altar defenders check your actual new position.

The Wickkeeper can attempt a short retreat toward home when a visible enemy is close. It spends the same mana and cooldown and must find a valid landing. It gets no free escape.

A five-second game capture shows one paid Lantern Step and the Pusling walking after its wizard.
Exact exported pack: one real cast, 100-to-75 mana, then physical brood movement. One hundred full-frame samples at 20 fps from fixed 60 Hz, resized to 960×540. This is a scripted demonstration, not a manual playtest or frame-rate measurement.

One more lantern in the spellbook

Departure and arrival use our own soft filaments, cinders and a short synthesized sound. The sound shares the existing limited pool of positioned effects. No new external asset was needed.

The HUD and patron screen now include Lantern Step. Hover or focus for its quick hint, then click or press Enter for the isolated live preview and current numbers. The spell shown there cannot spend resources or affect a match.

The Lantern Step ability inspector shows its isolated Godot effect and current mana, range and cooldown.
Actual exported inspector. It uses the same original effect controller as the match. Full frame, resized.

Your controls come with you

Right mouse now defaults to Lantern Step; G gives brood move and attack orders. Existing customized bindings and presentation settings are retained. If a deliberate binding already uses a proposed key, teleport gets an unused fallback and Settings explains the change. The existing Swap control lets you choose another arrangement.

Source regression, separate-process profile migration, native input fixtures and exact exported-pack checks passed. Computer use inspected entry, the new inspector, target feedback, pause and a real match restart. Pointer-control interruptions prevented a conclusive manual successful-landing observation; that behaviour is covered by the automated native-input and exported-pack fixtures. Shaun’s hands-on judgement of the spell’s feel remains the next acceptance check.

Next, find room to fight

Tactical creature movement follows this checkpoint, then an original flying ranged summon. Additional wild creature families and camps remain a separate step. The match still conserves eighteen souls.
