Field note 15Spells & sound

What the embers carry.

A charred seed leaves a wake of soot and embers. Carrion Bloom grows a low fungal bed. Original casting, impact and creature sounds give both a place in the mire.

Lantern Mire · Spell family Burning seeds, living embers and sound in the world v0.5.12
An ember seed flies toward the Wickkeeper above a low glowing fungal bed, bounded by a clear cyan ring.
Actual 0.5.12 Mac export at the ordinary eight-metre camera. A native fixture places both wizards and disables their drivers; casting uses the normal mana costs. The target has extra health to survive the sequence. Full-frame game pixels, resized.

After the Ground Remembers proof, Shaun chose a clear order: finish the other spells and sound, let the arena react, improve creature combat, then bring the neutral camps to life. This first increment extends the selected Lantern Pyre language to Rot Bolt and Carrion Bloom.

Two different gestures

Rot Bolt is a split, burning seed. Its ember core travels with the actual projectile, followed by a short trail of soot and falling sparks. A small burst marks its real point of impact.

Carrion Bloom spreads close to the ground: charred mushroom clusters, branching ember veins and rising spores. Its circle follows the terrain and shows the actual four-metre boundary. The field pulses with the existing damage rhythm, then sinks away after six seconds. Cyan and coral markers distinguish the teams.

Seven seconds of actual exported gameplay show a Bloom growing, three burning seeds crossing it, impacts and the field fading away.
Exact 0.5.12 export. Seven seconds sampled at 20 frames per second from a fixed 60Hz native fixture. This demonstrates the visual sequence; it is not a frame-rate measurement.

The same cast before

The protected 0.5.11 build ran the same camera, paid casts and target positions. Its translucent Bloom spheres and earlier projectile provide a direct comparison with the new treatment. The rest of the arena is unchanged in this increment.

The same spell sequence in the previous build shows translucent green Bloom spheres and the earlier projectile effect.
Protected 0.5.11 export, with the same staged conditions and seven-second sampling. Neither comparison uses retouched game pixels.

Small pieces made for this world

We built the seed and fungus clusters from scratch in Blender, with grain, split husks, uneven caps and creeping rhizomes. The editable sources are separate from the earlier models, and both were opened and inspected in Blender. Godot supplies their heat, soot, glow and motion.

The effect is deliberately low enough to keep creatures readable. We corrected an invisible boundary in the first native capture and reduced the fungal glow before accepting the export. The illustration’s dense smoke and painterly finish remain aspirations.

Sound that belongs to a place

Nine original synthesized cues cover seed casting and impact, Bloom opening and pulses, light and heavy footsteps, a creature voice, swipes and slams. They play at the event’s position, fade with distance and share four bounded spatial voices. The existing warning cues keep priority.

Pause, mute and saved volume apply to the new layer. A native test caught a sound queued on the pause frame continuing to start; that race is fixed. All 23 PCM files pass signal checks, with conservative mix headroom. Subjective listening still needs Shaun’s playtest.

Checked, then onward

The complete regression passed 983 assertions. The exact Mac pack passed 209 asset and exclusion checks plus 39 focused spell and sound checks. These cover paid casts, swept hits, both teams, terrain alignment, unchanged damage timing, pause, repeated effects, restart and cleanup. Native computer use also confirmed a paid Bloom, saved settings and a clean exit.

The new Mac build and complete 0.5.11 predecessor are retained locally. Intel hardware, Windows, notarization and human visual, sound and combat judgement remain unverified. Performance work stays wrapped; these captures add no sustained-rate claim.

Next in Shaun’s chosen order: selected vegetation and small props will react to spells, and the existing water will ripple. Timed creature attacks and roaming neutral camps follow as separate checked increments.
